Our church small group (and about 50% of our church) are participating in a book study of One Month to Live.
Last night I shared that one thing I wanted to change was how much time I spend reading magazines compared to books -- how I've become a slave to my many subscriptions. Someone asked me to be specific, and I listed the magazines and the ones I was going to let go, the ones I never read. To put it kindly, the group got after me for saying I'd let National Geographic go before People magazine.
But I read People magazine cover to cover ever week. I look forward to it on Fridays. No article is more than 5 minutes long, and most are 15 seconds, which allows for interruptions. It's been my guilty pleasure, and my secret (until now....)
And I fall asleep before finishing any NG article these days as much as I love it.
But after everyone left I realized that I spend 52 hours in a year reading a magazine that has no real redeaming value in my life. Do I learn anything in that magazine that I can teach my children? Does any part of it help me in my walk of life? No.
I had my answer. So today I bravely did it -- I cancelled my subscription. The freedom of those extra hours in my life is AWESOME!!!
