Nature's Ice Sculptures

Last year was the first time in my life that I recall seeing these "frost flowers" or "ice ribbons," which are formed when sap in the stem freezes and breaks open. I decided to take a photo this year, but it doesn't do it justice. I hope to capture better shots as it happens again!

New Bikes

Daniel and Emily donated their bikes to a friend's adoption fundraiser in September and haven't had bikes since. We took them to look at bikes today so they could tell Santa what they wanted, but instead let them take home the ones they picked. We are hoping for decent enough weather than we can go on some family rides in the next few weeks.

7 Years Ago Today

ADOPTION DAY! Seven years ago today we became a family when we picked Daniel and Emily up from their infant homes in Chelyabinsk, Russia. (Don't we ALL look younger in the photo?) God had a great plan for all of us, as usual!

Emily Turns 8

Emily turned one while we were in Russia to adopt her, during our waiting period where we got to visit her every day. On her birthday we got to bring yogurt to feed her. We went out that night to celebrate with our agent, interpreter, and driver.
When we came home, we celebrated with a cake that my parents bought and had ready when we arrived. We let her blow out the candle, but on doctors advice we did not give her any cake. She had very limited food sources in Russia and we had to slowly introduce new things. We didn't want her to get a taste for sweets and refuse to eat the healthier food her body really needed. It was a strange way to celebrate.

Today she turns 8. She likes a variety of treats these days, but generally prefers fruity candy like Skittles, or cookies, more than cake. We made Fruity Peebles Treats (like Rice Krispie Treats, but better) for her birthday party, and are having Golden Oreo Cakesters today.

As always, we say extra special prayers for Emily's birth mother today.
